Duo Opus 131 no 3 |
Max Reger |
Clarinet Duet
Two duets by Reger, arranged for two clarinets. The first movement is a compete canon, with the second player entering after half a bar. The second duet has a similar feel but is more fugal, with the second part being more independant of the first. This contrapuntal texture gives the music a Baroque feel, but the wide ranging keys, multiple time changes and dramatic dynamics add a more Romantic dimension to the pieces. Fairly short pieces (about 40 bars and about 50 bars) but marked at Vivace and Allegro con spirito, these are around grade 5-6 standard.

Sonata da Chiesa opus 1 nos. 1-3 |
Arcangelo Corelli |
Clarinet Trio (three Bb clarinets or two Bb clarinets and alto/bass clarinet) - part of the Combined Wind Trio series.
Corelli's first three Trio Sonatas make a great first step into ensemble music and the music of the baroque. Each sonata consists of four movements of varying lengths and difficulty, with equal interest in all parts. Players of approximately grade 6 standard will enjoy the challenge these pieces present. Parts may be mixed with the companion arrangements for flutes, saxophones and double reeds.

15 Three Part Sinfonias |
J S Bach |
Clarinet Trio
3 Bb clarinets
These pieces will challenge the best of players. A variety of key and time signatures (including 9/16) offer a range of moods for the performers to capture. All three players participate equally in the music, and musical sensitivity is essential to make sense of these pieces as the tunes pass from part to part. Definitely one for the grade 8 players. |

Prelude from 'Carmen' |
Georges Bizet |
Clarinet Quartet
4 Bb clarinets
A straight arrangement of the Prelude to Bizet's opera Carmen that loses nothing in the reduction to four parts. All players take turns to play the tune and the accompaniments. Not overly taxing in the notes, although the middle section is in Ab major. Quite a long arrangement, but it was too good to leave anything out! Approximately grade 4-5 standard.

Dido's Lament from 'Dido and Aeneas' |
Henry Purcell |
Clarinet Quintet
3 Bb Clarinets, Alto Clarinet (or Bb clarinet), Bass clarinet
A relatively straightforward arrangement. The 3/2 time signature will be good practice for younger players, and the chromatic bass line will give a chance to check on intonation. The first three clarinet parts all cross the break, but the slow tempo gives time to prepare! About grade 3-5 standard.

Edvard Grieg |
Clarinet Ensemble
Eb clarinet, 4 Bb clarinets, Alto clarinet (or Bb clarinet), Bass clarinet (or Alto clarinet), Contrabass clarinet (or Bass/Contra-alto clarinet)
Two movements, Allegretto Expressivo and Andante.
These are larger scale arrangements allowing other members of the clarinet family to shine. The first movement features a long bass clarinet solo, whilst the second movement features the Eb clarinet more. Slower tempi, but more complicated notes; double sharps feature in one section of the second movement. All clarinet parts cross the break. About grade 5-8 standard.

6 part Clarinet Ensemble
4 Bb clarinets, Alto clarinet (or Bb clarinet), Bass clarinet
The challenge of this pieces lies not in the notes involved (clarinet 4 does not cross the break), but in the contrapuntal nature of the music. Parts are completely independant the time signature changes twice within the piece. The 3/4 section features frequent syncopation giving some parts a 6/8 feel against other 3/4 parts. And this is all at an Allegro tempo! With work, players of grade 4-6 should be able to enjoy this piece.

Josef Rheinberger |
6 Part Clarinet Ensemble
4 clarinets, alto clarinet (or Bb clarinet), bass clarinet
A relatively simple yet beautiful arrangement of a choral piece by
Rheinberger. G

Clarinet Quintet in A Major K581 |
W A Mozart |
Solo Clarinet and Clarinet Quartet (2 Bb clarinets, alto/Bb, bass clarinet)
This is a full arrangement of the famous Mozart Clarinet Quintet for a
full clarinet quintet. The solo part is for clarinet in Bb, and the
piece has been transposed so that the fingering matches the version for
clarinet in A. In the accompanying parts clarinet 1 does go up to top G
fairly frequently making it fairly challenging. Clarinet 2 and the lower
parts are easier, although they do use the full ranges of the
instruments. Rhythmically straightforward, and beautifully melodic, this
is a standard piece of clarinet repertoire now available for a new
combination of instruments.

Grand Quintetto Opus 34 |
C M v Weber |
Solo Clarinet and Clarinet Quartet (2 Bb clarinets, alto/Bb, bass clarinet)
This is a full arrangement of Weber's Grand Quintetto Op. 34 for
clarinet quintet. The solo part has been left unchanged, with the
accompanying parts now on clarinets. This is a true clarinet showpiece,
with most of the interest lying in the solo part. The accompanying parts
are rhymically straightforward, although clarinet 1 does ascend to top G
a few times. The lower parts are more straightforward. A chance to hear
a standard piece of clarinet repertoire for a new combination of
instruments.

Clarinet Quintet Opus 115 |
Brahms |
Solo Clarinet and Clarinet Quartet (2 Bb clarinets, alto/Bb. bass clarinet)
A full arrangement of Brahms' famous clarinet quintet Op. 115. The solo
part has been transposed for clarinet in Bb, but the keys have been
changed so that the fingering remains consistent with the version for
clarinet in A. As one would expect from Brahms, this work is technically
challenging in all parts. The full range of every instrument is
explored, and this is a rhythmically complex piece requuiring a high
degree of musicianship to perform well. Nevertheless, this is a piece of
standard clarinet repertoire now presented in a new combination of
instruments, hopefully making it more accesible to a wider range of
players. Well worth the work.
