Oboe Trio

A four movement piece, each one with a different character. The first is florid and decorated, the second contrapuntal, the third with the character of a baroque instrumental air, and the last fast and furious. The main issue with this piece is stamina; the second movement runs to 123 bars with very few rests. For stronger players, a welcome chance to play together.

This double-bass solo from The Carnival of the Animals makes a great humorous show piece for the bassoon, or even the contrabassoon. The solo line is in part 4 with the top three parts providing the accompaniment.

Double Reed Quartet - 2 oboes, cor anglais, bassoon or cor anglais

These short dance movements translate well into the double reed ensemble. Comprising an Allemande, a Courante, a Sarabande, two Minuets and a Gigue, the contrapuntal nature of the music ensures that all parts are interesting and enjoyable to play. The minuets are comparatively easy and could be approached by grade 3/4 players, whilst the allemande and the gigue are more compex.

Solo oboe and double reed trio - Solo oboe, oboe, cor anglais or bassoon, bassoon

A full arrangement of Mozart's famous Oboe quartet for solo oboe, oboe, cor anglais or bassoon, and bassoon. The solo oboe line has been left completely unchanged so players familiar with the work will be ready to tackle this immediately. The other instruments cover the string parts, the different timbres matching their replacements beautifully. In three movements: a charming first movement with some contrapuntal sections, a slow lyrical second movement dominated by the solo oboe, and an exciting third movement with some fireworks in the solo part. Suitable for players of about grade 6/7 standard, although some stamina is required to get through the whole work.  

Double Reed Quartet - 2 oboes, oboe or cor anglais, bassoon or cor anglais

This short Renaissance piece attempts to recreate the sound of a consort of instruments. The music flows through all parts, bearing little regard to the metrical divisions of the bar lines, which have been added by the editor to help modern players get to grips with this style of music. Not terribly difficult, about grade 4 standard. A chance for wind players to try some really early ensemble music.
