Duo Opus 131 no 3 |
Max Reger |
Oboe Duet
Two duets by Reger, arranged for two Oboes. The first movement is a compete canon, with the second player entering after half a bar. The second duet has a similar feel but is more fugal, with the second part being more independant of the first. This contrapuntal texture gives the music a Baroque feel, but the wide ranging keys, multiple time changes and dramatic dynamics add a more Romantic dimension to the pieces. Fairly short pieces (about 40 bars and about 50 bars) but marked at Vivace and Allegro con spirito, these are around grade 5-6 standard.

Sonata Opus 3 no 3 |
Charles Weideman |
Oboe Trio
A four movement piece, each one with a different character. The first is florid and decorated, the second contrapuntal, the third with the character of a baroque instrumental air, and the last fast and furious. The main issue with this piece is stamina; the second movement runs to 123 bars with very few rests. For stronger players, a welcome chance to play together.

Four Madrigals |
Thomas Weelkes |
Oboe Trio
3 Oboes (optional Cor Anglais part replacing oboe 3)
This set of three madrigals by the renaissance composer Thomas Weelkes features frequent time changes and some lovely independant part writing. None of the pieces are overly long - about 30 bars on average. Part 3 descends to low C, but the other parts are relatively straightforward
note-wise. Could be tackled by confident players of grade 2-3 standard.

Three Romances Opus 94 |
Schumann |
Cor Anglais and Piano
This is an arrangment of Schumanns Romances Op. 94, originally for oboe and piano. The solo line is presented completely unchanged, so players familiar with the pieces will have no trouble playing them. The piano part has been transposed down and the chord voicings adjusted to accomodate the lower pitch of the cor anglais. These are a set of three extremely beautiful melodious compositions that suit the more mournful tone of the cor anglais perfectly. The second in particular presents some stamina issues for the player, but the set range from about grade 6 standard upwards.

Three Pieces |
Arthur Sullivan |
Bassoon Quartet
4 Bassoons
Pieces from Haddon Hall, Yeoman of the Guard and The Mikado. The first bassoon part reaches top Bb several times and top C once, whilst bassoon 4 descends to bottom Bb. The middle two parts are easier, but all three pieces are in Bb major so Eb's are common. Some contrapuntal sections, with some more traditional tune and accompaniment sections. Suitable for grade 4-8 players.

Sonata da Chiesa opus 1 nos. 1-3 |
Arcangelo Corelli |
Double Reed Ensemble (part 1 oboe or bassoon, part 2 oboe or bassoon, part 3 oboe, cor or bassoon) - part of the Combined Wind Trio series.
Corelli's first three Trio Sonatas make a great first step into ensemble
music and the music of the baroque. Each sonata consists of four
movements of varying lengths and difficulty, with equal interest in all
parts. Oboe 1
goes up briefly to top F, but a lower ossia is given. If played as a
bassoon trio, the top two bassoon parts spend most of the time in the
tenor clef and are not for the faint hearted, but grade 8 players will
be well rewarded. Parts may be mixed with the companion arrangements for
flute, clarinet and sax ensembles.

French Suite no 1 |
J S Bach |
Double Reed Quartet - 2 oboes, cor anglais, bassoon or cor anglais
These short dance movements translate well into the double reed ensemble. Comprising an Allemande, a Courante, a Sarabande, two Minuets and a Gigue, the contrapuntal nature of the music ensures that all parts are interesting and enjoyable to play. The minuets are comparatively easy and could be approached by grade 3/4 players, whilst the allemande and the gigue are more compex.

Oboe Quartet |
W A Mozart |
Solo oboe and double reed trio - Solo oboe, oboe, cor anglais or bassoon, bassoon
A full arrangement of Mozart's famous Oboe quartet for solo oboe, oboe, cor anglais or bassoon, and bassoon. The solo oboe line has been left completely unchanged so players familiar with the work will be ready to tackle this immediately. The other instruments cover the string parts, the different timbres matching their replacements beautifully. In three movements: a charming first movement with some contrapuntal sections, a slow lyrical second movement dominated by the solo oboe, and an exciting third movement with some fireworks in the solo part. Suitable for players of about grade 6/7 standard, although some stamina is required to get through the whole work.

Fantasia |
Giovanni Coperario |
Double Reed Quartet - 2 oboes, oboe or cor anglais, bassoon or cor anglais
This short Renaissance piece attempts to recreate the sound of a consort of instruments. The music flows through all parts, bearing little regard to the metrical divisions of the bar lines, which have been added by the editor to help modern players get to grips with this style of music. Not terribly difficult, about grade 4 standard. A chance for wind players to try some really early ensemble music.
