Patterns for Sub Contrabass Flute
Lynne Williams
Solo Sub Contrabass Flute
An exciting addition to the repertoire of a newly emerging instrument. Heard mostly in flute choirs and ensembles, this is a chance to give the giant of the flute family the spotlight. Some extended techniques used, and the key slaps actually work extremely well on the longer tube of this flute. Using a range of two octaves and with some long phrases, this piece presents some challenges unique to the sub contrabass flute.

Duo Opus 131 No 3
Max Reger
Flute Duet
Two duets by Reger, arranged for two flutes. The first movement is a compete canon, with the second player entering after half a bar. The second duet has a similar feel but is more fugal, with the second part being more independant of the first. This contrapuntal texture gives the music a Baroque feel, but the wide ranging keys, multiple time changes and dramatic dynamics add a more Romantic dimension to the pieces. Fairly short pieces (about 40 bars and about 50 bars) but marked at Vivace and Allegro con spirito, these are around grade7-8 standard.

Duo KV 423
WA Mozart
Concert Flute and Alto Flute Duet
This is an arrangement of Mozarts duo for flute and viola KV 423 for
flute and alto flute. An extensive piece in three movements (fast, slow
and then fast again), this piece was designed to give the alto flute
some of the classical chamber music that is missing from the
instrument's repertoire. Both parts are intricate and interesting; the
two outer movements will require neatness of fingers and tongue, while
the slow middle movement demands a singing tone and light playing from
both parts. Flute 1 extends well into the third octave, and the alto
flute part goes up to top E in the 2nd octave.

Trio Sonatas Opus 2 nos. 1-4
Arcangelo Corelli
Flute Trio - three flutes or two flutes and alto/bass flute
These transcriptions of Corelli's Op. 2 Trio Sonatas make great
ensembles for grade 5 players. Each sonata consists of four small
movements, varying in length from 8 bars to about 50 bars. Movement
titles are taken from dance suites of the time, but the tempi do not
necessarily reflect the titles. The top two flute parts are rhythmically
independant, while the third part provides the bass line. (An alto flute
part is included as an alternative to a concert flute for part 3). Key
signatures are simple (C, G major and A minor), giving the players time
to focus on the polyphonic lines. Flute one reaches top G very
occasionally, whilst flute 2 reaches top F# once. Musically both
interesting and attractive.

Terzetto
Antonin Dvorak
Flute Trio - 2 flutes and alto flute
Originally for two violins and a viola, this charming trio works well on two concert flutes and one alto flute. A fairly substantial work in four movements. The first is allegro non troppo with contrapuntal interest in all parts. The second slow movement alternates long lyrical sections with spiky dotted rhythm sections. The third movement is a Scherzo marked Vivace, which is very reminiscent of both Dvorak's and Brahms' Slavonic Dances. The last movement is a Theme followed by a set of variations, each exploring a different style, building to a fast and exciting ending. All of these with Dvorak's characteristic harmonic and melodic touches make this a lovely addition to the chamber music repertoire list. Standard is about grade 6-7.

Trio Opus 87
L van Beethoven
Flute Trio - 2 flutes and alto flute
An arrangement of Beethoven's trio in C major, Op. 87. Originally written in 1795 for two oboes and a cor anglais, this piece transfers well in this arrangement for two flutes and an alto flute. In four movements: a fast 1st movement, a slow and lyrical 2nd movement, a Minuetto that is really a Scherzo marked Allegro molto and finishing with a finale marked Presto. All Beethoven's stylistic traits are here, and all parts are interesting and rewarding to play. Not technically challenging, although flute one has some fast tonguing particularly in the finale. Players of grade 4 standard and upwards should be able to gain much from this piece.

Flute Quartet
2 flutes, alto flute and bass flute.
(Bass flute may be replaced by a 2nd alto flute)
Whilst not technically challenging, this arrangement requires musicality from all players for a successful performance. Tutti sections lead by the first flute alternate with contrapuntal sections where all players take an equal role. Abendlied Op 69 no 3
Josef Rheinberger
4 flutes, alto flute, bass flute
A relatively simple yet beautiful arrangement of a choral piece by Rheinberger. G major with an andante tempo marking. Chordal passages alternate with some simple counterpoint building to a magnificent climax in the middle of the piece. Players of grade 3 standard should be able to get a lot out of this piece.
A fairly large scale arrangement of the three entractes from Bizet's
Carmen for flute choir.
Each movement has a different character - the first is march-like, the
second lilting and romantic, and the third is full of spanish fire. The
first movement is relatively straightforward featuring bass and alto
flute solos. The second requires sustained playing in the third octave
from flute one in particular, and the third requires nimble fingerwork
from all players and strong tonguing to bring out the spanish feel. At
around 6 minutes long, this is a nice suite to include in a concert.
Five movements: Country Dance, Burlesco, Adagio, Sarabande and Bouree.
Whilst playable by six players, this works better with multiple performers on each part, and is a firm favourite with our local flute choir. The third and fourth movements are relatively easy, with slower tempi and notes not surpassing top E. About grade 5 standard. The other movements are more complicated, involving faster tempi, complicated rhythms and key changes. Flute one goes up to top C, but this is optional! About grade 7-8 standard.

Serenade
Piotr Ilyich Tschaikovsky
Flute Choir/Ensemble
Piccolo, 3 Concert Flutes, 2 Alto Flute parts (Bass flute part doubling Alto flute 2 included), Bass or Contra-Alto Flute, Contrabass Flute
This is a full, unabridged arrangement of one of the outstainding pieces of string repertoire. This makes it a challenge for the more advanced flute choir. In four movements: 1. Pezzo in forma di Sonatina, 2. Walzer, 3. Elegie, 4. Finale (Tema Russo). The first and last movements in praticular are very long and require stamina to get through. The middle two movements, while shorter and slightly easier, need musical handling to bring out all the subtle nuances of the music. Definitely one for Grade 8+ players.
An ideal piece for the less experienced flute choir. 44 bars long in G
major with an Allegretto tempo marking, this was originally a choral
piece which has been transcribed for flute choir. Flute one and two reach top G, whilst the third and fourth part go no higher than 2nd
octave D (although there are some A#'s to deal with). The alto and bass
parts are very simple, allowing players less certain on these
instruments to find their feet. The second half of this piece is an
identical repeat of the first half, with flute one changing material
with flute two, and flute three changing with flute 4. A useful concert piece.
This piece features all the most satisfying elements of Renaissance music. Whilst none of the parts indiviually are difficult (nothing higher than D), the complex eight-part polyphony make this more of a challenge than it would first appear. The articulation requires detailed attention to bring out the various entries of the themes, and the dynamics need to bring out the echo effects used in this music. A very interesting large scale flute choir arrangement.
Three choruses from Handel's Messiah (Let us break their bonds asunder,
For unto us a child is born and His yoke is easy) arranged for large
flute choir. The contrapuntal nature of
these pieces takes them out of the realm of a simple sightreading
exercise and makes them really meaty pieces that need careful practice
and rehearsal. All parts (even the lowest flutes) take part in the
counterpoint, and flutes one and two need agile fingers and nimble
tongues to negotiate the extended semiquaver passages. Something
different for the Christmas concert!
This is a complete transcription of Grieg's famour Holberg Suite. The
layout is designed to be as flexible as possible.
It is possible to perform this work with a lineup of piccolo,
4 flutes and two alto flutes, for groups who do not have access to the
larger instruments. This piece is in 5 movements: Praelude, Sarabande,
Gavotte and Musette, Air and Rigaudon. The praelude requires long
sections of fast tonguing from all players, and flute one in general
needs a player of about grade 8 standard, but the lower parts are much
more accessible. The differing characters of each movement make the
while piece well worth working on, and this piece has gone down well in
our local flute choir concerts.
This is a full and unabridged arrangement of Tchaikovsky's Overture to
The Nutcracker Ballet Suite. Bubbling with attractive tunes which pass
between all parts, flute 1 needs agile players who can cope with fast
tonguing while the lower parts become simpler. The alto flute part is a
particular challenge as it frequently echoes the semiquavers of the
upper parts, whilst the bass flute part ventures into the third octave
giving the whole score the lightness of the original. A great way to
open a flute choir concert.
The final section of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite, again in a full and
unabridged arrangement for large flute choir. Full of beautiful melodies
which pass through all the parts, the addition of the optional harp
gives a whole new dimension to the flute choir. The upper parts need
good players as the notes are not straightforward initially, while the
lower parts are simpler. The alto and bass flutes get their own solo
bringing them to the fore for a change.
This is a full arrangement of the Danses Characteristiques from
Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite. Full of well known tunes these character
pieces give larger flute choirs a chance to show their range and
flexibility, from the speed and excitement of the Trepak to the sinuous
melodic lines of the Danse Arabe. The parts are graduated, with flute 1
being the hardest and flute four the easiest (about grade 3). Includes
the famous flute feature, the Danses des Mirlitions.
An arrangement of one of Gustav Holst's earlier works, originally for eight part women's voices. Lush harmonies and simple flowing lines build to create a beautifully elegant sound world. The statement and answer sections mean that this piece works well antiphonally with the two quartets separated, but is just as good as a large choir piece. The relatively straightforward lines and simpler instrumentation make this an ideal piece for flute choirs that do not possess the larger instruments.

Edvard Grieg
Flute Choir Ensemble - Piccolo, optional G treble, 4 flutes, alto flute, bass flute, optional contr'alto, optional contrabass and very optional subcontrabass
Composed in 1880 for piano duet, these four charming dances make a delightful addition to any concert. In four movements, the first and last of which are more extended compositions featuring varied tempi and moods; fast semiquaver sections alternating with slower sections of lush harmony. The fourth movement in particular gets faster and faster ending with an exciting Prestissimo section. The second and third movements are simpler, but no less attractive. This is scored for a large flute choir - piccolo, four flutes, alto and bass flutes, with optional extra parts for G treble, contrabass, contra-alto and even sub contrabass flutes. All instruments have interesting but playable parts - flute 1 goes up to top A while flute 4 is about grade 3 standard.

Orchestral Suite
no 2
J S Bach
Solo flute with Flute Ensemble - 2 flutes, alto, bass, optional contr'alto and contrabass
This is an arrangement of the famous Bach Orchestral Suite No.2 in D for
solo flute and flute choir. The solo part has been left in it's original
form, while the accompanying choir has optional parts for contra-alto
and contrabass flutes. The opening Ouverture is by far the longest
movement, with a slow and highly decorated opening followed by a quick
fugal section. A selection of dances follow; a Rondeau, a Sarabande, two
Bourees, a Polonaise wit
ha variation, a Minuet and finally the famous
Badinerie. The solo flute sometimes merely doubles the first choir line,
but in other movements (most notably the Polonaise variation and the Badinerie) it has it's own important part to play. A chance for a wider
range of musicians to get to play this deservedly famous suite.
